Men out of the hunt

The men’s and women’s basketball teams have some eerie similarities this season. Both have been very up and down, both have had to overcome what the coaches have called “selfish play” and both seem to not have much respect from the referees.

Men face big loss on home turf

It was a rough week for the men’s basketball team.
After a solid 18-point victory over the Everett Trojans Jan. 28, a game in which six Olympic College players scored double digits, the Rangers (2 - 7 league, 5 - 15 overall) have since dropped three straight games.

Women get first season win

“It was amazing, we deserve it,” said Alyson Chandler after the Rangers women’s basketball team finally won their first game of the season Saturday.

Women still searching for first league win

After working out the kinks, forward Danielle Stewart said she was anxious to play again, and win a league game in basketball for the first time this season.

Men get first win in league play

“We have been struggling with the selfish-issue all year, I just now came out and said something publicly. We have the talent to win, we are just not playing together,” said basketball head coach Barry Janusch after the Rangers’ eight-point loss to Seattle Community College Jan. 16.

Helwig: ‘We have been beating ourselves’

“We have literally been beating ourselves, it is really frustrating,” said women’s head coach Tammy Helwig of the Rangers’ rough start to the season.

Men’s team not winning in league

The banged-up Olympic College men’s basketball team opened the season with a record of 3 - 7 in non-league play. They began league play Wednesday and have since lost the opening two league games, despite finally having a full healthy squad.

Volleyball travels to Oregon for first playoff visit in school’s sport history

“We made history in a sense,” said Michelle Glass. “I hope this is the beginning to a winning tradition.” For the first time since 2004, the Rangers’ volleyball team made it to the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges’ tournament and for the first time ever made better than a fourth seed.

Janusch: Wins may be in reach if team pulls together

“It’s going to be a good season for people to come out and watch us,” said sophomore Josh Koets of the upcoming basketball season.
Last season, the Rangers finished the season with a 3 - 13 record, and this year plan to do better.
One of the Rangers’ big problems last year was their size. Several teams were much bigger and that made it tough for the Rangers.
“We are not all that much bigger, but we are more athletic with more skillful players,” said coach Barry Janusch.

Men's soccer stopped in championship game

“It was the true underdog story, no one gave us a chance in hell but us and they never gave up,” said head coach James Ritchie after the Rangers took second place in the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges’ soccer final.
After playoff wins against Clark College and Edmonds Community College, OC took on Highline in the final four.
In the regular season Highline defeated the Rangers twice, so they knew it was going to be a challenge.
“We lost twice in tough games, the defense made mistakes in the past and we knew we had to stay organized,” said team captain Andrew Conti.
At the start of the game, Highline had the edge, keeping possession and getting off more shots.
The Rangers had their best chance of the first half in the 26th, but Highline was just able to make the save.

Men's soccer goes to final four on first playoff visit

“I was excited, relieved, just a lot of emotions at the same time,” said men’s soccer coach James Ritchie after Tyrelle McLeod-Bentley scored the game-winning penalty kick against Edmonds Saturday, to send the Rangers to the final four for the first time in Olympic College history.
After a 0 - 2 loss to Highline Nov. 5, a game keeper Christian Valdez said they were not focused in, OC squeaked into the playoffs for the first time in history.

Playoffs are unlikely for women’s soccer team

With a league record of 4 - 8 - 2, Rangers soccer coach Jessica Carter said unless a crazy scenario happens, the Rangers are out of the playoffs.
Still, in the Rangers’ last three games they haven’t lost.
“We have had a couple games where we struggled and mentally were in a rut,” said Carter. “But I am not surprised we have been playing well.”

Men's soccer still in playoff hunt

It has been a rollercoaster ride of a season for the Olympic College men’s soccer team.
The last three games against Bellevue, Trinity Western JV and rival Peninsula have been some of the wildest.

Volleyball clinches playoff spot

After their most recent win against the Whatcom Orcas Wednesday, the Olympic College Rangers Volleyball team has won four games in a row.
With a league record of 6 - 3 and a third place berth, a feat OC has yet to accomplish, the Rangers clinched a spot in the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges playoffs.

Men get win and loss at home

With another league win Saturday over Tacoma Community College, the Olympic College men’s soccer team holds an impressive 5 - 1 - 2 record.
The Rangers took on the high-powered Bellevue Bulldogs Oct. 5.
Just as the Rangers have done numerous times this season, they found themselves in a hole early as the Bulldogs took an early 1 - 0 lead.

Runners go to Tacoma for XC

“I am happy as can be. How we run, focus, and prepare, it’s all coming together. As coaches, we love this stuff,” said head track coach Daryl Schruhl after the impressive performances both the men’s and women’s cross country teams gave Saturday at the Pacific Lutheran University Invitational.

Volleyball wins tournament

The Olympic College Rangers volleyball team played in what could have been the most exciting game of the season against Tacoma Community College Oct. 5.
“Oh my gosh, it was such a good game,” said Crystal Colo. “If we played like that every game, with that kind of intensity, we would kill everyone.”

Ladies still struggling in league

“It was just one of those days where nothing was working,” said head coach Jessica Carter after the women’s 0 - 5 loss to Tacoma Community College Saturday.
Prior to the game, Carter said the Rangers had been playing good soccer.
