Another talent wasted

A funeral service for Whitney Houston was held Feb. 18 for approximately 1,500 mourners in Newark, NJ.
Fans have complained about not having a large memorial service like the one held for Michael Jackson’s fans.

I am worth representing

The student body president elected by students is out; in his stead our new representative of the student body is a student leader who was not put into office by an election, but was hired by a committee.

From spelling to speaking

When I was a much younger chap I had problem with spelling. As a result of my spelling issue, when I tried to write, whatever I wrote was indecipherable. For me it seemed as if it wouldn’t matter if I had written anything at all. Because I couldn’t write, I couldn’t tell my teachers what I was learning, and even though I wasn’t lazy, and I wasn’t stupid, I felt stupid and lazy. As a third-grader I felt like nothing I wanted to say would ever make sense to anyone other than me.

Making the most of it

I never wanted to be here at Olympic College. Not by a long shot.
After high school, all of my friends were going to the four-year university of their choosing. I had the grades and the SAT scores, why would I have to settle for a community college? Well, my parents didn’t want to pay for a four-year (I understand why, now) so it was OC for me.

How to: Not be an asshole part 2

Welcome to the second edition of my critically-acclaimed column, “How to: Not be an asshole.” Of course, by critically-acclaimed I mean one girl taped it up at the coffee stand in the Bremer Student Center, and at least three people have told me it was funny.

Chefs fall short in new quarter

I ate a lot of wonderful food over the holidays. Everything I ate was amazing. It didn’t matter who cooked it, or what it was, I gorged. All that wonderfulness may have spoiled me.

Is ‘maybe’ an option?

Student participation at Olympic College, your participation, has been a problem for as long as I’ve known participating in events on campus was an option.

New curb paint needed for parking

After receiving a parking infraction on Ohio Avenue, the road that borders the Olympic College campus and Bremerton High School campus, for parking in a “safety zone” next to a blocked-off driveway which hasn’t been used in years, I began to notice how many cars were being ticketed on a daily basis for dubious infractions.

Thankful for food; and bros

Lots of food, no work, no school, getting to see old friends and family and of course, football, make Thanksgiving the perfect guy’s holiday.

No thank you, Thanksgiving

Quick, what holiday combines awkward family moments, disgusting food, irritating sports matches, an obnoxious parade, a ridiculous celebration of overconsumption and a history of genocide? If you said Thanksgiving, you’re right!

Streetlights, people, oh, oh, oh

The school is being given a state grant to pay for a traffic light to ease people’s transition to and from the new parking lot. The grant will pay for the light and it will be installed at 13th and Warren. At the same time, the state and city are planning upgrades to the 11th and Warren light.
First off, what stupid monkey thought a new street light was a bright idea? They say a guesstimated 6000-odd cars roll down Broadway per day and that gives us justification to put a new light in? Anyone bother to check how many of those cars need that light? Are we looking to the wheel in the sky for advice?

Car theft victim talks

On Wednesday, at 1:02, p.m. my car was stolen less than four minutes after it was parked.
I’m the second-born in a family of eight. Two of my sisters and I attend classes here at Olympic College.
My father is a mailman and my mother volunteers at Klahowya Secondary School, building sets for the school plays.
My family all pulled some funds together to help pay for a car that was needed to help transport us wherever we needed to go.

Halloween's Terrible

Halloween is traditionally known as a “spooky” holiday; to me it’s a nightmare.
Halloween is one of our oldest holidays and is derived from the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain.
The ancient Gaels believed October 31st was a time when the worlds of living and dead basically overlapped each other. They believed the dead would come back to kill crops or create sickness.

Halloween's Awesome

Halloween: It’s like Christmas for weirdoes.
Whether you call it Hallowe’en, Samhain or All Hallows’ Eve, it is arguably the most fun holiday of the year.
As an oddball goth kid growing up, Halloween was always the only time of year where no one yelled, “Hey freak, it’s not Halloween, you know,” at me as I went about my daily business.

Pucci: My disability is ‘not a crutch’

I am OC … and I have a disability. Albert Einstein was a brilliant physicist,

How To: Not be an asshole

With over 8,000 students attending Olympic College, it’s inevitable that occasionally someone might annoy you on some level.

Cuts to education hurt more than just students

General education, and by extension, higher education, are an investment in the future, right?
We educate those people who will replace us when we retire or shuffle off the mortal coil. So, what does it say that we’re making nearly half of our cuts from the state budget out of funds for education?
