From Gang Life to Student Life

Giovanne Salas was at a party in Northern California in the mid-90s.
“I bet you can’t finish the whole bottle in one drink,” said some punk kid.
Salas said he felt his anger rising as he thought about the test to his manhood and pride that he’d just heard.
“No, but I bet you I can finish it in two,” said Salas.
Salas raised the bottle of vodka to his lips and began to drink. Twenty minute slipped by, then the night got bad. A short time later, Salas was laid out in a hospital bed staring up at a bright light; head throbbing, mouth dry and convinced he was dead.

Shasha Torgeson

Student organizer Sasha Torgeson may not have a lot of free time on her hands, but that’s how she prefers it.
Born in Alaska to Air Force parents, Torgeson moved to Bremerton at age 5 and has lived in Kitsap ever since. She graduated from Bremerton High School in 2011, and was an Olympic College Running Start student.

Chess tournament in vet center brings surprising turnout

Dannon Tabing was declared the winner of this week’s chess tournament, a competition hosted by the Associated Students of Olympic College Executive Council, held in the Veteran and Military Service Center on Tuesday.

Environmental club acts locally

Students from Olympic College braved cold weather Saturday to remove trash from the north end of Dyes Inlet.
The OC Environmental Club, under the direction of OC professor Susan Digby, hosted the Marine Debris Program at Mill Creek Park to help improve wetland ecology in the area.

Public speaking teacher outspoken on awareness of human rights issues

“I’m not interested in people memorizing and regurgitating information, I’m interested in people making sense of the information in a way that becomes useful for them,” said Victoria Newsom, Olympic College’s new professor of communications.

Street Art at The Gallery

The usually-white walls of Olympic College’s The Gallery at OC were covered in spray paint Oct. 14 when the gallery opened for an 18-day show featuring street artists from Seattle and Tacoma.
The gallery walls are currently covered in what some would consider property-damaging street art, the majority of it created with spray paint. Political messages dot the walls amidst colorful murals and stylized graphics.

“Start here, go anywhere…” For former Olympic College student Stephen Arno, the slogan from the cover of the quarterly class schedule, The View, has proved to be true.
Arno started at OC in 1961 and now one of five books he published, “Northwest Trees,” is a textbook and field guide for the Natural History/Pacific Northwest class.

With the departure of Olympic College’s former women’s head soccer coach Dick Lowry, assistant coach Jessica Carter stepped up to take on the role of head coach.

Get ready for the Rocky Horror Picture Show

“Rocky Horror Picture Show,” the 1975 cult-classic film, is being shown, complete with live lip-synching cast, at the Admiral Theatre on Oct. 29 at midnight.
Richard Padro, artistic producer of the show, as well as director of community outreach at the Admiral Theatre, said he is excited they are able to put on the show in time for Halloween.

More than just coffee

The Global Bean is in a pickle.
Business is slow. Their entertainment calendar is scarce. Their future is uncertain.
The coffee shop held an event Oct. 8 called “Celebrating the Bean” in an attempt to help the ailing venue.
“We apologize for the short notice but sadly our beloved Global Bean currently is in the midst of a financial crisis and we are rapidly approaching a time where a decision must be made regarding our future, including possible closure,” said the description for the show’s Facebook event.
