The History of Rock ‘n’ Roll class at Olympic College Shelton recently hosted a concert featuring a performance by Alison Baker to a small audience.

Baker performed several songs to about 30 students in the reading room at OC Shelton, most of which were written and composed by the talented musician herself.

“Ever since I was a kid I have had a love for music,” said Baker. “I started playing at a young age and have grown more and more passionate about it.”

English professor Carmen Hoover, who has known Baker for several years, elected to have her come and perform for her class.

“I think it’s important for the students to have contact with an actual artist and to be able to ask questions,” said Hoover. “I wanted them to see what the music industry was really like today.”

The class, which educates students on the progression of music beginning in the 1800s, focuses on several genres, not just rock ‘n’ roll.

“I like the students to see how much has changed in the industry over the years,” said Hoover. “It’s good to know several types so you can fully understand what an artist is saying.”

Many artists cite personal struggle as the inspiration for the majority of their lyrics and songs. Baker is no exception.

“I went through a lot when I was younger,” said Baker. “Music for me is a way to artistically convey what I have been through and how I got through it.”

With her guitar close by, Baker answered many questions presented by the audience, ranging from her love of music to what inspires her most.

“It’s kind of tricky to find an artist who is comfortable playing live and who’s articulate,” said Hoover. “She’s a good interview, and I needed a singer and songwriter to talk to them.”

While Baker is still in community college, she is hoping to eventually pursue a career in music.

“I love everything about music,” said Baker. “Of course I hope to pursue a career in music. It’s absolutely thrilling.”
