Jodi Mitchell celebrates with teammate Irene Moore after a win against Whatcom Community College. Mitchell scored 20 against the Orcas.

After winning two of the teams first three games the OC women’s basketball team looked as though they were going to have a promising season, but hit a wall and were never really able to come back from that. The Rangers finished the season with a 4-16 overall record and a 3-13 league record.

On Feb. 24 the Rangers faced off against Edmonds Community College. The Ranger’s Jodi Mitchell, who is still recovering from an injury earlier this season, scored a team high 20 points and Jessica Jordan added 13 for the Rangers. Although the Rangers played a good game they fell short to Edmonds 61-70.

On Feb. 27 the Rangers wrapped up their season with a game against the Whatcom Community College Orcas. The Rangers knew this was the last game of the season and two of the Rangers star sophomores this season, Mitchell and Jordan, stepped up their game in the final game of the season. Jordan, who will hopefully be an alternate in the sophomore all-star game, had 12 rebounds, and Mitchell, who made the Northwest Athletic Association of Community College’s north league first team, ended her Olympic career with 29 points. The Rangers defeated the Orcas 65-57 in front of a home crowd.

The Rangers will be losing a few players for next season but Irene Moore, Ashley Frank and Jasmine Campbell are expected to return next season. Moore is excited to get prepared for next season.

“It’s a fresh start and we need to keep our heads up,” said Moore. “We need to get right into things and meet in the gym and get things right.”

This was the first season for head coach Tamy Helwig and during the off-season she plans to get the team into shape for next year. Although Helwig sighs at the fact that she can’t officially sign players until April a few players have told her they want to play for her next season.

“We have tons of off-season stuff planned,” said Helwig. “We need to raise money and are going to have a late spring league and I want people to know we are having a high school league as well.”
