The Olympic College Rangers Golf team hosted the Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges’ tournament championship May 23 and 24.
The Rangers have finished in sixth place nearly every tournament this year and were hoping to finish the season with a stronger finish. Since OC was hosting the event, they had the advantage because they played the course nearly everyday.
“Our best competition this year has been Columbia Basin (Community College). We wanted to beat them once this year,” said head coach Bjorn Burke.
The course was playing tough and no one really stepped up and played a great round, but with a tough course, OC finished in sixth place.
“We without a doubt wanted to do better since we hosted it,” said Ben Nelson. “I can’t speak for others but I know I struggled with my putting and I shot a few shots higher than normal.”
The Rangers finished with a 606 total just six shots back of their biggest competition Columbia Basin. Two of the players who won’t be returning for the Rangers next season, Nelson and Joel Schenfeld, led the way for the Rangers; Nelson shooting a 149 and Schenfeld shooting a 148.
“We weren’t our best, but not bad,” said Burke. “They were all mediocre, but we did play the Olympic course and it was really tough.”
The Rangers have seven with a possible ten players lined up for next season. Nelson, the teams’ lowest shooting and most consistent golfer and Schenfeld the number two golfer will both not be returning for the Rangers next season, yet hope to find somewhere to play next season. As for the returning players they plan on practicing through the summer.
“Some of them that are coming back are playing in a Bremerton city amateur tournament coming up soon,” said Burke. “Hopefully they can keep playing and keep in shape for September.”
