In preparation for the 18th annual job fair in May, the Olympic College Career Center, as part of Career Development Month will be assisting students, alumni and the community in furthering their careers through a number of tools and workshops.
The job fair will be held on May 7 in the Bremer Student Center from noon to 3 p.m. Patricia Triggs, director of Career Services, said she is expecting 62 hiring employers, each will bring between one and four recruiters to attend the event.
"There have been years when some employers hired right on the spot," said Triggs.
She said that Career Development Month has only been around for four or five years. It was created because the job fairs were getting low reviews when they were evaluated by the hiring employers at the end of each event. She said that the preparation by the Career Center in the last two years has made an impact with those employers ,and job fairs are now being rated as "good to excellent."
"It's a testament to Olympic College," said Triggs. "This is the 18th year we have been doing this and the quality of employers continues to increase and a majority of these employers have been coming back for years. I think that says something about our education and our students and I think that is something to be really proud of."
Triggs said one of the ways the Career Center is helping job seekers for Career Development Month is by offering free workshops all month long. These workshops are in place to prepare students for the job fair and to assist students who can't make it to the job fair. The workshops range from: "The Evolving Workplace," to "Summer Internships with Regional (Mason County) Employers" and "Résumé for Hire-EHL Insurance and Harrison Medical Center Representatives." For a full list of the workshops being offered visit the Career Center.
According to Triggs, the Career Center is assisting job seekers by offering free résumé critiquing and helping applicants stand out amidst the crowds by creating a minute-long sales pitch to introduce themselves to prospective employers. Triggs said she is currently putting together a list of attending employers for interested students.
"Research these companies," said Triggs. "Look at their Web pages, their mission, their customer-base, their product. Come prepared and engage those employers."
