The second floor of the Haselwood Library played host to a steady stream of students and their families along with interested staff, faculty and administration during the sixth annual Olympic College Student Photography Show March 5.
More than 50 people showed up to the event which began a little after 5 p.m. as the OC photo club presented the exhibition with the theme, "Frozen in Time" featuring work by students and highlighting both creative and unaltered imagery.
The contest is generally open to any student who has taken one or more photography classes at OC. Also included in the display, was a collection of photographs, a small retrospective of earlier work by Laurie Usher, OC photography professor and adviser for the photo club.
The photographs, which were judged in late February, were hung in the library on March 3 and are on display until April 16, allowing ample time for the public to view submissions and awards.
This year's collection numbered about 20 less than normal due to the transition from a wet processing component to a digital darkroom.
The awards ceremony, presided over by Usher, commenced just after 6:15 p.m. in the north conference room in the Bremer Student Center.
Members of the photo club did not evaluate the contest but invited three guest judges, photojournalism professor Michael Prince, professional photographer Don Paulson and former OC student and Kitsap Sun staff photographer Lenna Himmelstein to discuss and award student work based on a variety of criteria.
Winning students were notified on March 3, however a few only discovered the good news on opening night.
This year's "Best in Show" award went to student Tim Dolen. Dolen, who attends North Kitsap High School, won with his photo of friend Nick Rood riding a dirt bike near his residence in Kingston.
