The Associated Students of Olympic College began the budget-planning process for the 2008-2009 school year on Dec.14 and will begin making their final decisions Friday.
Leslie Miller, president of the ASOC, said the committee wanted "to fund a diversity of programs."
After the hearings were over Miller said they had an idea how these diverse programs could help students, which is the purpose of the funding.
Organizations requesting funding from the ASOC were to complete an extensive form by filling out information about their reasons for needing funding and how they would use the funds. The budget request forms were distributed from Dec. 14 through Feb. 7 to currently funded programs and also to organizations interested in receiving funding for the following school year.
The request forms were submitted from Feb. 11-15 to the Student Programs Office. A final copy of the organizations requesting funding was made for the budget hearings. The hearings began Feb. 19 and lasted through March 5. The hearings consisted of about four representatives at each hearing who spoke to the ASOC members for about 30 minutes. The representatives brought packets of information about their programs, which they referred to for some examples and statistics, and discussed why the funding was necessary. After presenting, the ASOC members asked questions about the packets and the presentation. The questions were aimed at trying to understand what exactly each program offered for the college community.
Once the ASOC makes their decisions on who will receive funding and how much will be distributed to each organization, they will move on to the final budget development. The Services and Actives Budget Committee will convene and send a final statement to OC President, Dr. David Mitchell.
