how the season will go
for the Olympic College
men's basketball team
that is made up of only
freshmen but is also
one of the most talented
groups of young men to
play for OC.
The Rangers won the
season opener against
Wenatchee Valley in
the final seconds of the
game, but then suffered
back-to-back losses from
Highline on Nov. 21 and
Centralia on Nov. 28.
"We just played flat,"
freshmen shooting
guard Julian Holliday
said of the match against
Centralia. "We had no
intensity, no enthusiasm.
We just came out bad."
Assistant coach Kevin
Van Hook, also new to
the team, said one of
the team's weaknesses
is their lack of leadership
and other qualities of a more seasoned
team.
"They just make mistakes that young
teams make - composure, executing knowing
the right moves to make."
Van Hook said the team has what it takes
to win games but they need some work.
"They are playing good in moments but
they haven't played for a complete game
yet," Van Hook said. He also said the men
will have to play tough this season to win.
"(The season) can be a successful one if
they come to play," he said. "We don't have
any gimmies. Everyone has to play to be
successful."
Holliday has the same optimistic view of
the team.
"I feel like our team could be as good as
we want it to be," he said.
Holliday said the team has been working
hard to prepare them for the intensity of the
games.
"We run three-minute scrimmage
games," he said, "to get that atmosphere to
be able to compete during a game."
"We're on the right track," Van Hook
said. He added the team is working hard in
practices to simulate game-like situations.
