of returning players
and solid incoming
freshman, the Olympic
College men's golf
team looks to repeat
their NWAACC North
Division championship
this season.
"If we play like
we're capable of playing,
we should be No.
1," said Daryl Matheny,
third year men's golf
coach and 2006-2007
NWAACC North
Division Coach of the
Year.
He said he would
be looking to his four
returning sophomores
- J.D. Rastovski, Matt
Strandberg, Adam
Whitaker, and Josh
White - for leadership
on and off the course.
Matheny said he
feels that the team has
gotten an early jump
on the spring season
with the team playing
so well. In comparing
to last year, Matheny
said, "I feel like we're in
good shape. Our players
are more dedicated.
They're putting in more
effort."
On Sept. 30 and
Oct. 1, OC traveled to
Centralia to participate
in the Centralia Invite.
OC finished 7th out of 13
teams. OC was lead by
White and Strandberg,
who tied for 24th and
29th, respectively. White
shot 79 and 75, finishing
with 154, while
Strandberg shot 78 and
77, ending with 155.
Rastovski shot 80 and
84 and Whitaker shot 77
and 81. Freshman Brad
Guzman finished with
a 79 and 84 and Adam
Caduille finished with
an 80 and 88.
After their opening
tournament, the OC
men's golf team traveled
to Skagit Valley to take
part in the Skagit Valley
Invitational where
they played at Avalon
Golf Course. OC will
be keeping a healthy
rivalry intact against
Skagit Valley. OC is 6-2
lifetime against Skagit
despite Skagit winning
the last time they met
last season on May 21.
OC was edged out by
just six strokes, losing
641-635.
With only one tournament
left in the fall
season, the Rangers
are looking to finish
out strong with a tournament
victory under
their belts. The Rangers
will travel to Treasure
Valley, Ore. to compete
in the Treasure Valley
Invitational. Their first
round of golf will be
played at Ontario Golf
Club. The second round
will be held at Scotch
Pines Golf Course located
in Payette, Idaho.
During the Spring
2008 season, the Rangers
hope to hold their title
as a powerhouse
golf program in
the NWAACC North
Division.
Last season the
Rangers stole Skagit
Valley's third consecutive
North Division title
by finishing the season
10-2, just squeaking
by Skagit Valley's 9-3
record. The Rangers
will definitely have a
target on their backs
this season as they start
out as the defending
champions.
"Our biggest rival
this year is going to
be Skagit Valley,"
Matheny said. "They
will be looking to take
us out."
