A former Olympic College
student was booked into the
Kitsap County Jail on Oct. 11
and held on $1 million bail for
suspicion of second-degree
murder of his father in Kingston.
According to the Kitsap Sun,
Garrett McKinstry, 21, was
arrested at the scene of the crime
for stabbing his 53-year-old father
Jeffery Allen McKinstry to death.
Q-13 Fox News said that the court
records said Garrett McKinstry
allegedly told detectives that he
stabbed his father repeatedly
with a steak knife after he was
told to move out of the family's
home. The records said that he
told investigators that he tried to
set the body on fi re "because he
wanted it to disappear."
"He's my friend and I support
him," OC student Patricia Lewis
said. "Even though he was
wrong for what he did I still have
sympathy for him."
The deputies were called
around 4:48 p.m. to the 25000 block
of South Kingston Road where
they found Jeffery McKinstry
fatally wounded in the driveway.
At 5:10 p.m. Garrett McKinstry
was arrested after deputies forced
their way into the house and
found him on the ground.
According to the Kitsap Sun,
the sheriff's offi ce spokesman
Scott Wilson couldn't confi rm that
the man died of a knife wound
but said that it appeared that the
deceased man died from "violent
means."
A statement from the office
said that deputies were on the
scene minutes after the assault
was reported. North Kitsap Fire
and Rescue was on the scene as
well.
Garrett McKinstry made
a preliminary appearance
at 3 p.m. on Oct. 12 at the
Kitsap County Superior
Court. Prosecutors asked to
reserve the right to file a
first-degree murder charge
in the case and the arraignment
was scheduled for
Monday.
Jeffery McKinstry was
a school counselor in the
district for 12 years. Before
transferring to Ordway
Elementary School, he began
a career as a counselor at
Woodward Middle School
on Bainbridge Island. He
was also a fifth-grade teacher
at Suquamish Elementary
School from 1989 to 1994.
Kitsap County prosecutor
Kevin Hull said that
the state attorney is sending
Garret McKinstry for
an evaluation before filing
charges and they expect a
defense involving a mental
illness. "It protects the
integrity of the prosecution,"
Hull said.
"I think it's a tragic," OC
Program Coordinator Debra
Montez said. "I've known
Garrett and it's shocking but
it just goes to show that you
don't know everybody's
whole story."
