After about a year of
discussion with Olympic
College students, faculty
and members of the community,
the Mission and
Visions Committee is prepared
to release their final
draft of the new version of
the college's goals to the
community for approval.
The objective of the committee,
led by OC Shelton
Director Kim McNamara, is
to revise the college's mission,
visions and values
statements to more accurately
reflect OC's image by
gathering feedback from the
people who make up the
campus community.
"The college and the
environment changes so
much over time," said OC
Communications Director
Jennifer Hayes. "Where we
were five years ago isn't
where we are today."
"The last time (the statements)
were changed was 10
years ago," said OC Trustee
Peter Crane. "Visions get
stale over time. They are
designed to have a timeline."
Crane explained that a
mission statement defines
why a college exists, values
describes what is important
to the college community
and vision statements
explain what the school
hopes to accomplish.
McNamara said the new
vision statements were
drafted to be measurable, so
the college had a future goal
it could strive for and an
achievable destination that
could be reached.
"It's one thing to put a
mission out there, but it's
another thing to actually
measure it," McNamara
said.
The committee drafted a
set of new vision statements
that satisfy the needs of the
students, the faculty and
the community, especially
employers in the area.
"We wanted (the vision
statements) to truly represent
all of our community,"
McNamara said.
A major part in designing
statements that represent the
many facets of the college
community was participation
from all the groups that
are affected by the college.
Crane said he was pleased
to see how many people
