enjoyed their weekend off
from school, the Associated
Students of Olympic
College spent two days in
Olympia watching the legislative
process in action
and learning valuable leadership
skills at the Student
Leadership Academy held
by the Council of Unions
and Student Programs.
During their stay at the
state capital, the ASOC, led
by President Leslie Miller,
met with other community
and technical colleges
in a collaborative effort to
raise legislative awareness
and create a unified front
through networking.
On Oct. 12, Miller
and her crew, including
Michelle Cruver, director
of student programs and
leadership development,
spent the day in several
workshops aimed at topics
such as college civics and
effective messaging.
In addition to these
special classes, the group
attended a special dinner
with Sen. Derek Kilmer, DGig
Harbor, and Deb Merle,
Higher Education Policy
Advisory to Gov. Christine
Gregoire, who explained
the importance of community
and technical colleges
getting involved and
having their voices heard.
A legislative question and
answer session wrapped
up the evening, allowing
the students' questions to
be fielded by the Kilmer
and Merle
On Oct. 13, the ASOC got
into the action by providing
testimonies in a mock
hearing using the techniques
they learned from
the previous day's sessions.
Students were asked
to pick from a selection
of topics and develop two
to three-minute messages
relating to higher education.
Some of the chosen
topics included adult education
and financial aid.
The visit to the state capital
ended with our student
leaders developing and
planning for the Student
Voice Academy, also put
on by CUSP, at Highline
Community College at a
date yet to be determined.
Overall, student representatives
learned important
exercises that are
going to be emphasized on
campus.
