The hallways and walkways at
Olympic College were fi lled with
the aroma of barbequed burgers
on Sept. 26 as the Welcome Back
BBQ got the 2007-2008 school
year off to a rolling start.
Student Programs sponsored
the event, held from 11 a.m. to
1 p.m. in front of the Bremer
Student Center, with help from
the Multicultural Center and the
Associated Students of OC.
Culinary arts students sold
burgers and drinks for just $2
while other student volunteers
handed out OC coffee mugs and
book bags.
ASOC Secretary Selena Ayers
said she thought the event was
successful despite some early
organizational problems.
"I think it turned out really
well," Ayers said. "People got a
lot of cool stuff."
"We had a little bit of a
problem," ASOC Executive Vice
President Aileen Arsenio said,
adding some elements of the
event fell through, like having
club tables set up, "but in the end
everything came out okay."
Not all students were pleased
with this year's BBQ.
Dawn Michele Wilson, who
attended lat year's BBQ, said she
thought this year's welcoming
activities fell short of last year's.
"It sucked this year," Wilson
said. "Last year there was tons of
music and tons of food. This year,
all I got was a hamburger, potato
salad and a soda."
Michelle Cruver, the new
director of Student Programs,
said there were some reasons
for the shortcomings this year,
but is optimistic about the rest
of the year.
According to Cruver, the culinary
arts department is short
staffed, which may account
for the small food spread. The
tables that were supposed to be
available for club booths were
taken at that last minute due to
a class over load.
Cruver is already looking for
what's next this year, and has
not been deterred from these
minor, early set backs.
"We are at the cusp of generating
a great group of student
leaders that will create a good,
positive environment."
Along with helping put
together fun and exciting events
that encourage student involvement,
Cruver is also working
to get more students engaged
in leadership by introducing
oppurtunities for students to
learn more about leadership.
Cruver is also hiring student
organizers that will assist
her and the ASOC in putting
together events.
