offi cials responded to the college's
reaction to the Oct. 2 shooting
in Bremerton, citing a lack of
communication between security
and police during the incident.
The incident occurred on
Montgomery Avenue when Darrin
Darrell Maiden, 28, allegedly shot
the victim who later drove to the
Callow Avenue Safeway for help.
Maiden was captured Friday
afternoon in Tacoma while the
27-year-old victim was still at
Harborview Medical Center in
serious condition.
Rocky Wallace, director of
Safety and Security, said in an email
to all OC staff and faculty
that a staff member fi rst alerted
him of the incident approximately
30 minutes after police were
dispatched to the scene.
Wallace said security contacted
CenCom, Bremerton's central
emergency operations center,
and received a description of the
suspect. The college remained in
contact with CenCom, he said.
At that time, Wallace said three
of the four available offi cers were
placed on the southern perimeter
of campus to institute a lockdown
if needed.
During the incident, Bremerton
High School, which lies west of
campus, was locked down as well
as all other Bremerton schools.
Wallace said the school s
were locked down because
transporting students on
buses could put them in
harm. OC was not locked
down because the incident
occurred nearly 10 blocks
away and police did not feel
the campus was in danger,
he said.
"At no time did Cencom
or the Bremerton Police
Department feel Olympic
College was threatened
or geographically located
within the danger zone,"
Wallace said.
According to Wallace,
this is the reason why OC
was not contacted by the
Bremerton PD.

where a gunman killed
32 people before taking his
