After years of being called the
Rangers, Olympic College will
cease to be known as woodsypark
fellows and will become
the Bears - if everything goes as
planned.
In the summer of 2008
everything that OC and the
Associated Students of OC have
worked for will be released to the
public. If the Board of Trustees
agrees to the change of mascots,
the graphic design will be a mix
of professional work and the
winning student graphic from
spring quarter of last year.
In the article published in the
Feb. 14 issue of The Olympian,
the Bears were chosen as the
school's new mascot by students.
Other mascots that were included
in this competition were the
Rangers, the Olympians, and the
Mountaineers. The Bears won
the vote three-to-one. The same
year, an art competition was held
and students chose the graphic
design.
Some students, like Thea
Gjerstad, look forward to the
change.
"I like the Bears because it's an
easier costume than the Rangers,"
Gjerstad said "You've got all these
types of Rangers. Why not just be
the Bears? Just stick with it."
The Ranger's appearance went
under many changes over the last
60 years. The mascot was chosen
in part to OC's forestry program
when the college fi rst opened. The
Ranger emblem of "Joe Spivens"
has been absent from uniforms
and logos for the last 10 years.
Even through all the changes,
some students are reluctant to let
go of the Ranger past.
"I think it's silly," student
Derek Ormiston said. "I liked
the Rangers and it's never been a
problem before."
"Rangers sound a lot better
than Bears," student Katie
Fiedor said. "Bears just seem so
unoriginal."
The ASOC hope to bring school
spirit back to the college, but as
Running Start student Laoren
Ormerod pointed out, "Rangers
or Bears shouldn't affect the spirit
of our school."
"If that changes the spirit of
the school, than the spirit wasn't
based on anything substantial in
the first place."
