Olympic College students had the opportunity to hear Dr. Kozhi Sidney Makai, a motivational speaker, talk about overcoming personal struggles.
On Oct. 27, Makai gave a captivating presentation to a crowded Rotunda about life, education, relationships and other aspects that affect people on a daily basis.
Preston Bennett, a student attending the presentation, was particularly inspired by everything he heard.
“It was phenomenal,” said Bennett. “He’s the best speaker I’ve ever heard, and I was left speechless.”
Despite the serious nature of some of the things talked about, Makai was humorous in delivering his message.
“You have to connect with people on a level they will appreciate,” said Makai. “Our society responds to laughter, and part of my intention in speaking with people is bringing light to their situation and moving forward from there.”
The overall message given to students was that everyone has a story, and it’s up to individuals to write their own.
“Each person in the world has their own story, which is a work in progress, and learning how to author your own story is important for individuals to succeed in society today,” said Makai.
OC student Briana Kinash was also inspired by the presentation.
“He reflected what I’ve been discovering,” said Kinash. “He firmed up the ideas I have as a person to step up in life, but also to be more open to people, opportunities and what’s happening around me.”
Makai’s personal story is as compelling as the speeches he gives to students at community colleges across the country.
He moved to Texas at the age of 18 from Zambia to attend school, but along the way encountered immense personal struggles and was at one time homeless.
“I know my story is different then other people’s, but along the path I figured out what I needed to do to begin writing mine how I wanted to,” said Makai. “Speaking with people allows me to connect with them, which I love doing. It’s great to get at the heart of everything and connect with people without any fluff, through all walks of life, knowing I can help their future.”
Makai is the president and chief executive officer of The Lectern, an organizational behavior and development firm that specializes in personal and corporate performance enhancement.
Makai has spoken with organizations such as the Coors Brewing Company, the state of Texas, the Salvation Army and others.
OC contacted Makai more than a year ago to have him speak to students, and various clubs and groups helped organize his appearance for the school.
Students attended his book signing after the presentation, asking more personal questions.
“It’s great when people show genuine interest in what was talked about,” said Makai. “I just hope I have positively influenced them to help them get on the right path to achieving what they want in life.”
In addition to his academic accomplishments, Makai has written three books, and the message each one conveys to readers is that they must do their best to reach their goals and dreams.
“In life, we don’t always get what we want, but we can hope,” said Makai. “Hope is the fire that keeps us going.”
