Last fall the Olympic College golf team was looking for a head coach, but the already busy OC athletic director Barry Janusch decided to take on the job himself.
In early March there was still an opening for the head-coaching job. The teams’ number one golfer, Ben Nelson told Bjorn Bjorke about the job opening and it was a perfect fit.
“I was working here (McCormick Woods Golf Course) when Nelson told me about the job,” said Bjorke. “I had got a hold of the assistant basketball coach actually and he told me there was an opening and we went from there.”
Bjorke graduated from South Kitsap High School in 1998. Bjorke has also been golfing since he was 7 years old. He also played all four years of high school.
Since high school, Bjorke has helped out the golf team at South Kitsap, has been the assistant coach at Gig Harbor High School and has ran the Northwest Junior Golf Tour at McCormick Woods.
“I have always wanted to coach,” said Bjorke, “But never really came up, so when I heard of this opportunity I jumped on it.”
One of the main reasons Bjorke is best suited for the job is because of how associated he is with golf in the community, and he has been so involved had already knew most of the players on the golf team.
“(The transition) was really easy, (Bjorke) jumped in there and was eager, and has no fear in helping out,” said OC golfer Joel Schenfeld. “He doesn’t tell us all the same thing, he gives us each a personal message which is special.”
Bjorke has only been the head coach for less than two months he is still very excited for the future of OC golf.
“We got a real good thing going here,” said Bjorke. “We have two awesome practice courses where the team can go and play wherever they want.”
