SHELTON — Liz Aitken, president of the Fun on Campus club on the Olympic College Shelton campus, organizes game events on campus every other week.
“We play bingo, we’ve had game days with DVD games like ‘Family Feud,’ ‘Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader’ and we’ve done off-campus events where we take students to the movies,” Aitken said.
Shawnie Balmer, Executive Council vice president of Shelton campus, said that of the 564 students enrolled at the Shelton campus, as many as 50 show up to these game nights.
“It’s interesting to see the increase in student participation,” Aitken said.
Having fun isn’t all they do as a club, though. Members of the club also volunteer their time every month at a local Shelton cemetery.
The Fun on Campus club is OC’s only club based primarily on Shelton’s campus. Every month, the eight club members partner with members of the College Skills and Life Training class to volunteer at Shelton Memorial Park cemetery to do landscaping work.
Balmer said, “They started the project on Earth Day this year, pulling Scotch Broom, moving large pieces of rocks and logs so that heavy equipment can get back there and prepare more gravesites.”
Since then, club members have donated six hours every month beautifying the cemetery.
Recently, Aitken negotiated an agreement with Shelton Cinemas so the Fun on Campus club gets discounted tickets using club money. Movie nights have 10-15 tickets available to students on a first-come first-served basis.
“I think it’s a great community outreach,” Balmer said.
