Deftones' latest album annoys and confuses

ARTIST: Deftones ALBUM: "Saturday Night Wrist" LABEL: Maverick

Vicious vocals, rough-necked guitars and nonstop drums are no strange things in a Deftones' record.

On first listen of this record, I was annoyed at a sound that is a little bit generic and unvarying. I had to push myself to listen to it a few times before I could really tell the difference between most of the songs.

The tracks aren't conventionally beautiful music, but not hardcore to the bone either. The screeching they do on a few of the songs is a flopping tragedy. Had I not changed the song, it might have warranted some painkillers.

There are some good things in this album, though. Even when the lyrics are written simply, they're usually paired with a certain catchy appeal in the composition.

"Combat" is among the best of the bunch with a spacey synthesized intro that breaks into drums and guitars and the best version of their screeching.

"Pink Cell Phone" is also more synth-oriented than most of the record, and would be cool if it weren't for the disturbing spoken-word part at the end.
